Chapter One- The Braygans

Torin Braygan sat in the dirt with his new carved horse, his athair (papa) had made for him. His little horse flew from the swing to the dirt pen all in one jump. Torin was proud of his wooden horse. None of my other cairde (friends) have toys this grand. He thought to himself full of pride.

A moment later his Mother walked out from inside the small cottage in which they lived. Their little cottage was built on one of the great many 'rolling hills of Ireland.' Torin's athair was very proud of his land. Deep rich soil. The Braygan family had the best garden from all around. Though Fergus may have been a bit prideful at times, he was also very humble and caring.

He and his wife Aileen gave hundreds of fruit and vegetables to the townsfolk that were in need and some to the folks who were fine already. The Braygan's garden stretched out a whole mile and a half growing tall stalks of corn and and tomatoes. But what the Braygans were famous for the most, was good fresh Irish potatoes. Some folk even paid the Braygans, just to show their gratitude.Fergus and Aileen Braygan led a good life. They were strong willed, able and plenty healthy. The children were just the same. When Aileen Braygan walked out the door of their home, she was holding a bowl made from baked clay. Inside the bowl, there was reddish brownish dough laying there.

She walked over to Torin who was still playing in the dirt and smiled at him. But then she gazed at the ocean as if waiting for her husband to come sailing home. Finally she called Elda, Torin's twin sister. "Elda, come out here and help me make more clay!!" Little Elda ran out from in the corn field and happily agreed.

"Elda, how many times have I told ya not to play in the corn field?

Elda looked down feeling ashamed. Aileen kissed her two children's heads and they both followed her back inside.

As they walked through the doorway, Torin looked back at the ocean, just a fewfeet away.He thought of his father, who was on a trip at sea. he had been gone for nearly four months. Aileen and the children missed him dearly. Fergus reassured them in his letter that he would be back by August. But Aileen knew in her heart that there was no telling when he would ever return.

To be continued ......
